Chatter

Chatter is Salesforce's built-in collaboration tool. It works like a social feed, letting you post updates, ask questions, share files, and communicate with your team — all within the context of your CRM records.

The Chatter Feed

You'll encounter Chatter in two places:

  1. The Chatter tab — a global feed showing posts from people and records you follow
  2. On individual records — the Activity tab on any record has a Chatter feed specific to that record

Posting to Chatter

On a Record

  1. Open any record (Lead, Client, Contact, etc.)
  2. Click the Activity tab
  3. Select the Post tab (speech bubble icon)
  4. Type your message
  5. Click Share

Your post is visible to anyone who can see the record. It becomes part of the record's permanent history.

On the Global Feed

  1. Click the Chatter tab
  2. Type your post at the top of the feed
  3. Click Share

@Mentioning People

Use @mentions to notify a specific person:

  1. Type @ followed by their name
  2. Select the person from the dropdown
  3. They'll receive a notification about your post

This is useful for:

  • Asking a colleague a question about a record
  • Flagging something for a manager's attention
  • Looping someone into a conversation

Following Records

When you follow a record, you'll see updates about it in your Chatter feed:

  1. Open any record
  2. Click the Follow button (near the top of the page)
  3. You'll now see posts and field changes for that record in your global Chatter feed

You automatically follow records you own. Unfollow by clicking the button again.

Comments and Likes

  • Comment on any post by clicking Comment below it
  • Like a post by clicking the thumbs-up icon
  • Comments keep the conversation threaded under the original post

Sharing Files

You can attach files to Chatter posts:

  1. Start a new post
  2. Click the paperclip icon or drag a file into the post area
  3. Add a message describing the file
  4. Click Share

The file is stored in Salesforce Files and linked to the record.

Chatter Notifications

Salesforce sends notifications when:

  • Someone @mentions you
  • Someone comments on a post you made or commented on
  • A record you follow is updated

You can manage notification preferences in SettingsMy Email Settings or the bell icon in the top-right.

Tips

  • Use Chatter on records rather than email — it keeps the conversation attached to the record so anyone reviewing it later has full context
  • @mention people when you need their input — they'll get a notification
  • Chatter posts are searchable via Global Search
  • Bookmark important posts by clicking the bookmark icon
